Helen Sinclair

Helen Sinclair
Helen Sinclair was born in Llanelli and studied sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art. After Wimbledon she returned to South Wales where she still lives and works. Working primarily in plaster, clay or wax, Sinclair's work is figurative and mostly based on the human form. With her full-time technician, she makes her own moulds and casts her pieces into limited editions either in stone-resin or bronze. The stone-resin is a recipe unique to her. Her bronzes are cast in the MB Fine Art Foundry in West Wales. Some pieces, modeled originally using driftwood and wax, become unique bronze casts. As can be discerned from the exquisite lines, forms and movements of her figures, Helen regularly works directly from life. She readily acknowledges a grateful debt to the influences of the sculptors Willhelm Lehmbruck and Alberto Giacometti and the painting of Picasso, Modigliani, Matisse and Chagall.

Jem Howe
Low Tide Jewellery is made in the adjoining village of Middleton. Most of the inspiration for the pieces comes from the shoreline, where the shapes are flowing, rounded and streamlined. The material used is predominantly Sterling Silver for its simplicity, texture and working characteristics. Pieces are hallmarked at the London Assay office to guarantee the silvers quality. All products are hand made by Jem Howe, a design teacher by profession and dedicated surfer. He grew up spending much of his time at the low tide mark of the local beaches, particularly Fall Bay, either crabbing, fishing or surfing. He still spends much of his time in, on or by the sea.

Kevin Ryall

Kevin Ryall
Born in Kent, Kevin Ryall attended the Ravensbourne Art College in the mid sixties and later joined a London advertising agency. Advertising proved to hold little interest for Ryall and he later moved into general business management. His first love was however not business but painting. He works primarily in oils, he says, "because other mediums just don't smell as good." In the last twenty years, demand for his paintings has increased steadily with works now represented in collections in the UK, Continental Europe, Australia and the United States. Ryall enjoyed two long stays at the Rhossili Farmhouse during the early 90's. Here he found an endless supply of wonderful material to paint, literally on the doorstep. In the year 2000 he brought his wife and family to live in Rhossili. The Green Gallery was conceived by his wife, Fiona, who organised the project and now manages it.

Laura Ponting
Laura Ponting creates her beautiful and highly original bowls in a workshop next to her cottage in SouthWest Wales where she lives with her husband who is a writer. Trained by the highly skilled Jamie Wallwin and the internationally acclaimed Master Woodturner, Melvyn Firmager, Laura is herself Registered with the Worshipful Company of Turners as a Professional Turner. For those with an appetite for technical information, Laura uses an Apollo Professional lathe, manufactured in Norfolk and she has recently invested in a VB 36 from Hegner (UK) Limited. The latter will enable her to work on a larger scale, which is a most exciting prospect for us. Laura's much sought after bowls are featured in a number of art galleries throughout the UK and we are particularly delighted that she has agreed to include her work in our Green Gallery exhibits.

Terry Ryall

Terry Ryall
Born in Farnborough Kent, Terry Ryall studied sculpture at the Wimbledon School of Art and now lives and works in South Wales with his wife, Helen. Ryall works mainly in wood, stone, steel and bronze. His recent sculptures, mostly stone carvings capture the essence of his subjects in a minimalist manner that reveals a powerful instinct for expression through physical presence rather than narrative. His equally subtle paintings with their thick swirling impasto also make full use of the way light moves in three dimensions, betraying the sculptor still at work and with more than a passing reference to the surface tension achieved by Van Gogh. Ryall's highly collectable sculptures and paintings are often described as abstract, although the starting point for much of his work can be found in objects ranging from the small domestic through to large landscape features.

Jane Fletcher
Born in Carmarthen, Jane Fletcher began painting in the early Seventies when she was a teenager. She is married and has two young children and a dog named Howler. A self taught artist, Jane believes the most important lessons can be learnt from a study of Monet whose influence is evident in her work.
She has exhibited widely since the mid eighties and spends much of the summer painting in rural France where she has a growing following for her work. Jane is particularly interested in the effects of light and her paintings frequently include reflections in water. The Welsh landscape with its huge skies and vistas also provides excellent subject matter and The Green Gallery has recently commissioned her to do a series of paintings on the subject of Gower light.
Jane mainly works in Oils and Acrylics which gives her greater freedom of expression and allows a degree of three dimensionality not available from other mediums.

James Selway
Geoffrey James Selway was born and spent his childhood in a mountain village in South Wales, United Kingdom and now lives and works in the Barcelona area of Spain. He studied art for three years at Swansea College of Art and later at Trinity College, Carmarthen. He became the Head of a highly successful Art Department in South London Secondary School. He later left teaching and continued to paint while carrying out various commissions including a large painting of the 'Annunciation' at the Roman Catholic National Shrine in Walsingham, Norfolk and design work for Southwark Cathedral, London. He has exhibited extensively in various galleries in the United Kingdom, United States and Spain and his work has been purchased by private collectors in the United Kingdom, USA, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Ireland. James paints with oil, acrylic and watercolour and his subject matter is also extensive and includes landscapes, city scenes and figures. He tends to choose particular areas as a source for his paintings: various regions of Spain, Southern France, England and his native Wales.

Stuart Mulligan
Stuart Mulligan lives and works in Cardiff. He holds a BA honours degree in illustration and a BTEC Diploma for Foundation studies in art and design. In his paintings he delivers complex messages with great simplicity, following in the spiritual footsteps of Turner, a painter much admired by Mulligan and a painter to whom he readily acknowledges a substantial debt. The artist’s portrayal of the Gower Peninsular are highly atmospheric and betray his fascination with dynamic cloud movements and the fleeting effects of light upon the land and water beneath. Mulligan's assured brushwork provides an end result that can be interpreted on a number of levels. At first sight, his work has an abstract quality, the topographical accuracy of the landscape only becoming apparent on closer inspection. In the artist’s words, 'I paint simply and evocatively, leaving the viewer to decide what the paintings mean to them'. Paintings by Stuart Mulligan have been exhibited at a number of well known galleries including The Albany Gallery in Cardiff and The Mall Galleries in London.
